“My dearest Rev. Mother, We have been having great doings in San Juan, there was a riot here Tuesday and the City was in the state of the wildest excitement, the rioters were very near us, and you could hear shots fired and hear stones flying, down our street, all night long this went on, two men were trying to get in our yard, from the next, and were planning so we thought to get over the wall, when a little dog in that yard barked, alarming the people, one of the men escaped, the other was caught, they may have been trying to get on the roof in order to throw stones at police, as that was one of their means of attack, the City was in total darkness as these rioters broke nearly all the lamps, I cannot say we were much alarmed, except those who were up, when the men were trying to get over the wall, what do you think of us having a little watch dog? ...” Later in the letter, Demetrias, among other things, explains that she is studying Spanish.
