Bishop John Gannon of Erie, Pennsylvania, n.d.

John Mark Gannon (1877-1968) was a native of Erie who was ordained to the priesthood in 1901. In 1903, after earning Doctor of Divinity and Doctor of Canon Law degrees in Rome, he returned to the Diocese of Erie, where he served as a pastor and as superintendent of the diocesan schools. In 1918, Gannon was consecrated as Auxiliary Bishop of Erie; he became the fifth Bishop of Erie in 1920. His episcopacy was marked by an intense interest in education and by opposition to the persecution of the Church in both Mexico and in Spain during the 1930s. He served as treasurer of the National Catholic Welfare Conference from 1944-1950, and attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s.
