“Mother Catherine,
Dear Lady,
I now write to you again making three times to give me my child Daisy Ellis that is Baltimore school I called to see you But was not given that privilege I have only received answer to one tell me she must stay her full time as Sadie and Joe died such good Christian deaths that was all very Kind of you [NOTE: It is revealed in other letters that Julia's other children, Sadie and Joe, died of tuberculosis ("consumption") at the House of the Good Shepherd] once when I was there I consulted Mother Francis and she told me that you knew that you should not have taken her that you right not to do so and learned after warde that it was spite work I told mother Francis I would pay her Board up until that time But she spoke very indignant to me and I can recall the very words Now I ask you again to give me my child Daisy and my reason for making this demand is cruelty the way I learn she is used you cannot make nothing else but cruel for a sister to stand and smack any child down and strip her an whip her until she is Blue I will not stand that I will wait for a timely answer and if you do not give me my child I will make it a Public affair I will start at the very beginning and make every one none to the Frame(?illegible) I will not stand my child cruelly Beat and knowing that she has no right to be there word was send to me again last week if it is necessary to make it a Public affair I will bring evidence looking to hear from you even I will keep a copy of this letter for future reference.
Yours Respectfully
Julia Ellis Kemp.
